Materia is the only artist-run centre in Canada whose mission is to disseminate and promote research and creation of exceptional established and emerging artists in the field of contemporary fine crafts.
Materia highlights unique and innovative researches that decompartmentalise fine crafts while respecting traditional know-how, as part of a resolutely contemporary process.
While working to develop the knowledge and acknowledgement of the practice of fine crafts and its creators, Materia strives to be recognized as a leader, and to become a reference in the field in the province of Québec, in Canada, and internationally.
Supporting the development of experimental practices, and the innovative use of material and techniques.
Disseminating the work of emerging and established artists, through exhibitions and satellite activities such as roundtables, conferences, performances, printed and digital publications, clips and videos.
Fostering reflection and the articulation of a critical discourse supported by historical research, contextualisation of contemporary practices, and the creation of a vocabulary specific to fine crafts.
Developping collaborations and partnerships at a national and international level, to give exposure to the work of Québécois and Canadian artists.
