Québec City, May 24, 2016 – Centre MATERIA and the Maison des métiers d’art de Québec (MMAQ) are presenting the exhibition Porte rouge, featuring works by the graduating students from the Ceramic, Fabric construction and Sculpture options of the DEC in Techniques de métiers d’art at Cégep Limoilou. The opening will be held on June 3, at 5 p.m. at Centre MATERIA, in the presence of the exhibition’s honorary president, Mr Norbert Langlois, entrepreneur, art collector and cofounder of the Galerie 3. The exhibition designed by Karine Galarneau will be on display until June 26, 2016.

For three years, the entrance of the MMAQ, the red door (porte rouge), has been a daily passageway for the nine graduating students of the Ceramic, Fabric construction and Sculpture options of the DEC in Techniques de métiers d’art at Cégep Limoilou. This red door has allowed them to step in and access their studio, their universe of creation, the practice of their art. Inversely, it is now leading them to step out into society as professional craft artists and present their works. Both a converging and an emerging point for these graduating students, the red door opens to a world of possibilities.

With this exhibition, Centre MATERIA wishes to propel these emerging craft artists towards a career filled with passion and discoveries.

The MMAQ is proud to present the 9 graduates of its class of 2016: Yannick Allen-Vuillet (sculpture) | Marie-Fauve Bélanger (sculpture) | Marianne Cloutier (sculpture) | Judith Dubord (ceramics) | Daphné Anaïs Fournier (sculpture) | Ksénia Kravchenko (fabric construction) | Caroline Pavan (ceramics) | Charles Thibaudeau (sculpture) | Alexandra Vachon (fabric construction)

Medias are invited to a private tour on June 3, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., with the graduates and Norbert Langlois.

At the opening, the various partners of the fine craft education program will gather together to reward the graduates’ efforts and talents with prizes. The MMAQ wishes to thank its main partners, the Cégep Limoilou, TELUS and the Association générale des étudiantes et des étudiants du Cégep Limoilou.

Norbert Langlois

Norbert Langlois was born in Saint-Vallier de Bellechasse in 1972. Following a DEC in plastic arts and a bachelor’s degree in arts education, he soon had a desire to collect art and developed a serious interest in this field. From his beginnings as a collector, at the age of 18, until today, his tastes and knowledge have been in constant evolution. He has slowly moved from a rather naïve and quite colourful art towards more complex universes. In 2012, he founded the Cercle des collectionneurs d’art actuel, a group whose mission is to promote and demystify the acquisition of art works. Then, in 2014, he founded the Galerie 3 with Abdelilah Chiguer and Pascal Champoux. He is also the vice-president of the board of directors at L’Œil de Poisson, the founder of the REPET (Regroupement des petites entreprises de théâtre), and the codirector and owner of Marie-Stella (family event management).

Karine Galarneau

Born in Québec City, Karine Galarneau is a multidisciplinary scenographer. Her first focus is on locations and their stories, to create narrative environments for stages, for galleries or in the city. Karine’s most recent adventures include scenography creations for the La Vierge Folle and the Point d’Orgue theatre companies, as well as public space occupation and transformation projects with Péristyle Nomade. She has initiated outdoor installations for the Zone Homa festival and worked on short-lived decors in collaboration with La TOHU, the Fête des neiges de Montréal, and the Piknic Electronik. In May, her work as a scenographer for the Pôle Sud, documentaires scéniques by Émile Proulx-Cloutier and Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette has been shown at the Espace Libre.

The MMAQ partners with the Cégep de Limoilou to offer the technical courses of the DEC in Techniques de métiers d’art, a 3-year college education program. It also offers workshops for the general public, summer camps for youth and adults, conferences, exhibitions, and artist residencies.

MATERIA is an artist-run centre whose mission is to disseminate and promote research and creation in the field of contemporary fine crafts, on a national and international level.
