Québec City, August 28, 2018 – To start off the season, Materia is welcoming Bivouac, la bataille des fourreaux from September 7 to October 14, 2018. This exhibition stems from the temporary collective formed by Isabelle Demers (Québec City), Anouk Desloges (Toronto) and Emilie Proulx (Montréal). The opening, with the artists in attendance, will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018, as of 5 p.m.

The exhibition Bivouac, la bataille des fourreaux features draperies and odd, colourful, often embroidered objects, which together form a picturesque landscape, halfway between the abstract and the figurative. In this installation, a campsite is built with textile sculptures evoking tents. Through these works embellished with animal patterns and symbols, the artists explore the medium on a variety of objects, going beyond their personal practices.

Materia is proud to pursue its mission by presenting the work of three artists who met in Québec territory and who enrich each other with their research and technique.

About the artists
Holding a master’s degree in visual arts from the Université Laval, Isabelle Demers melds together drawing, sculpture, and installation in her artistic practice. Her work has been presented in diverse collective and individual exhibitions, including at l’Œil de Poisson, at the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides and at artist-run centre Regart. A recipient of the Videre relève Prize for her exhibition Lourd comme un cheval mort at la CHAMBRE BLANCHE, she was also part of the 29th Symposium d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul.

A daughter of clothing manufacturers, Anouk Desloges builds an intimate universe that combines traditional and industrial materials. A graduate in plastic arts from the Université Laval with a college diploma in sculpture from the Maison des métiers d’art de Québec, she has won prizes and grants with her embroidery works: Ontario Council for the Arts, Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Première Ovation and Dalglish Foundation Venture Award. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, in France, in Guatemala and in Latvia. She has carried out a three-year residency at the Harbourfront Center in Toronto.

Emilie Proulx holds a diploma in plastic arts from the Cégep de Sainte-Foy as well as a diploma in textile design from the Maison de métiers d’art de Québec. She has been a curator for the event celebrating the Centre Materia’s 10th anniversary. Her embroidery works have been presented in diverse exhibitions in Québec and in France, including at Manif d’art, at the Symposium Arts et Rives de Lac-Etchemin and at the Foire d’art contemporain de Saint-Lambert. Her practice is rooted in her everyday life, to such an extent that the act of embroidering has become a ritual of hers.
