Giant flowers dance side by side. Each conceals moulded faces, sculpted materials, and a variety of techniques and colours. For this installation, Jiwan Larouche works freely with metal, wood, moulding, plaster and plasma cutting, as well as embroidery, blurring the technical and material boundaries that reveal the precious nature of the metallic fabrics, nails and beads.
Here, the artist transports us to the world of flowers and moths. Together, these hybrid flowers form a close-knit, vivid and vibrant duo. Perhaps we can recognise ourselves in these flowers that shimmer in the night. A multitude of metallic stars hangs around them – creating a magical atmosphere in the scene, like a symbolic sky floating above and enveloping the two figures. In all its forms, the installation evokes an encounter between bodies, nature, materials and textures. It speaks of uplifting connections, rituals and beauty that gently resist imposed norms and expectations.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jiwan Larouche is a craft-based artist. Coming from a background in puppetry and theatre, they develop a sculptural and installation-based practice where human, plant, and animal worlds intersect. Rooted in a direct relationship with materials and traditional know-how, their work explores the fluidity of identities, the diversity of bodies, and sensitive relationships between living beings and inhabited landscapes, through an embodied approach informed by bodily experience.
Their work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Quebec and has been acquired by institutional collections.
Recipient of several distinctions, including the Professional Emerging Artist Award (2025), the Materia Award, the MMAQ Award, and the Télé-Québec Jury’s Choice Award (2022), Jiwan also participated in the 43rd International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie-Saint-Paul. They work as a metal workshop technician at L’Œil de Poisson and are actively involved in artistic mediation and mentorship.
