Québec City, September 13, 2016 – Materia opens its new season with a collective exhibition gathering four emerging ceramic and fabric fine craft artists under the curation of Marie-Renée Otis, from September 23 to October 30, 2016. Come join us on Friday, September 23, from 5 p.m., with attending artists Arianne Poitras and Maxime Bouchard from Québec as well as Louise Taschet-Chêne and Azélina Michelet from France.
Les Traversiers des arts is a Franco-Québécois exhibition project that began in 2001 in Brouage, France. It allows two fine craft artists from Québec to gain experience by having their first exhibition abroad and the opportunity to get familiar with the process of exportation and to exchange on artistic practices. This year marks the 15e edition of the event, and to celebrate its anniversary, two young fine craft artists from France are coming to show their works in Québec.

Teaming up with this international event, Materia is pursuing its mission and emphasizing the importance of staying involved in its community to support the work of such promising artists as Louise Taschet-Chêne, Azélina Michelet, Arianne Poitras and Maxime Bouchard.

A few words about the curator
Marie-Renée Otis opened her fine embroidery studio in Baie-Saint-Paul 15 years ago. Trained in Québec, in the United States, in France and in England, she creates contemporary works using traditional techniques. She has taken part in many special projects, as a book illustrator in Denmark and through her involvement in a fine crafts school project in Central African Republic. She has shown her work around the world and given private workshops and conferences. In 2013, she was selected for a 6-month residency at the Studio du Québec à Paris.

This outstanding edition of Traversiers des arts in Brouage is made possible thanks to the support and collaboration of partners such as Materia, the Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec (CMAQ), the Syndicat Mixte de Brouage, the Département de la Charente-Maritime, the Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec (LOJIQ), the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC), the Office franco-québécois pour la jeunesse (OFQJ) and the Lycée Gilles Jamain in Rochefort.
