2014 01 EquilibreEtGravite
January 10 to February 23 2014
Opening Friday, January 10 at 5PM

Centre MATERIA is pleased to present the ceramic sculptures of Raymond Warren. “Équilibre et gravité” invites you to discover and take part to the artist’s characters playful life.

Équilibre et gravité is a single installation filling the whole exhibition room of Centre MATERIA. Raymond Warren created narratives scenes with ceramic figurines subjected to gravity and trying to achieve equilibrium. A poetic and playful atmosphere emerges from the whole installation. A great introduction to fine crafts, “Équilibre et gravité” will delight children as well as their parents.

Since 1988, Warren explores the opposition between our ingenuousness to apprehend destiny and the anxiety caused by an uncertain fate. Dichotomy is also present in his technique and materials. Under his hands, heavy, dense and stark stoneware is transformed to suggest lightness and elegant movements. Traces left by flames and ashes, during firing in a home-made kiln, become part of the artwork.

Raymond Warren resides and works in Bois-Franc, a small village located north of Maniwaki. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Université du Québec à Montreal, focusing on sculpture. He held several solo exhibitions in Quebec and Ontario. His works find their ways in prestigious private and public collections. The Canadian Museum of Civilization and Musées de la civilisation in Quebec City also acquired some of his sculptures.
