History

Since its creation in 2000, the Centre Materia has been presenting productions that stand at the frontier of the disciplines of fine arts, design, scenography, visual arts, and heritage, throughout more than a hundred exhibitions. The centre has presented nearly 600 creators and welcomed over 70, 000 visitors.

Local impacts

At the heart of a dynamic area in Québec city, where culture, trade, and business meet, Materia is located on the ground floor of the Maison des métiers d’art, a training and expertise center near the Université Laval’s visual arts faculty/Art school

Well-set in one of the most sought-after districts, the gallery’s two large windows give  direct access to the public.

At a local and regional scale, Materia is a hub where visitors, artists, citizens, tourists, students enter in a dialogue with the most contemporary ideas in fine arts.

International presence

To develop international partnerships, Materia has taken part in prospection missions initiated by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec (MCC), in Bordeaux, France (2002), in the United Kingdom and Wales (2003), and in England (2006).

After the 2002 Bordeaux mission, a France-Québec creation residency was carried out in partnership with the Maison des métiers d’art de Québec (MMAQ) in 2004-2005. It was followed in the fall of 2005 by the exhibition Les passeurs de mémoire gathering two Quebec artists and two French artists from different disciplines.

In 2014, Materia’s director attended the Festival International du film sur les métiers d’art in Montpellier to present short film Shozo Michikawa: NATURE INTO ART / LA NATURE FAITE ART.

In May 2019, with the collaboration of the Ateliers d’Art de France, the Centre Materia  represented  Canada as part of the exhibition Le Banquet au 4e salon Révélations – Biennale internationale métiers d’art & création held at the Grand Palais de Paris.
