Québec City, August 29, 2017 – Materia starts its new season with Compassion, an exhibition by ceramist Paula Murray. The opening, on Friday, September 8, 2017, begins at 5 pm with the artist in attendance.

Compassion is about expressing the relationship between clay, its processes of transformation, and the human condition. Paula Murray’s works explore personal and universal reactions and interactions that we all have with life’s wounds. The artist juxtaposes clay and fibreglass to create fractures, testing the endurance and the resilience of the form. By doing so, she converts suffering into objects of beauty and sensuality.

Materia is proud to pursue its mission by showing in Québec City the work of an innovating artist who explores the risks inherent to non-traditional processes through her technical mastery of the material.

About Paula Murray
Born in Ottawa, Paula Murray studied sciences at the University of Ottawa and ceramic at the Sheridan College. Elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2006, she exhibits her work abroad and has been awarded honourable mentions at prestigious competitions in Italy, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. In 2015, she received the Travail de l’Année prize of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for her installation Connection ⨝ Connexion and the Artiste de l’Année prize of the Fondation pour les arts, les lettres et la culture en Outaouais. A guest artist aboard the Canada C3 expedition, she has just returned from sailing the east coast of Baffin Island to Pond Inlet.

Materia is an artist-run centre whose mission is to disseminate and promote research and creation in the field of contemporary fine crafts, on a national and international level.
