Centre MATERIA is proud to take part in the program for Manif d’art 7 – The Quebec City Biennial, curated by Vicky Chainey Gagnon. Under the theme of Resistance – And Then, We Built New Forms, the work of the canadian sculptor Clint Neufeld will be presented at MATERIA from April 25 to May 25.

A former soldier and firefighter, Clint Neufeld is a sculptor who makes ceramic automobile engines, transmissions and other mechanical components. Although the initial forms are strongly associated with masculine identity, Neufeld’s sculptures are delicately decorated. This mode of exhibition is a call to resistance against stereotypes, while the mix of forms, material and intention address issues around masculinity and beauty, two concepts run through with a profound tension. One Yellow Rose, Pink 350, Left for George and Trailer Queen continue his exploration of mechanical forms. The pieces are painted in bright colours and their floral motifs add to the distance separating utilitarian function and aesthetic object. Set on pieces of household furniture, they are displayed as if they were fine porcelain. A new series of three light boxes accompanies them. Set in gilded frames, Engine Block, Carburetor and Crank Shaft take up the imagery of the sculptures.

Clint Neufeld holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Saskatchewan and a master’s from Concordia University in Montreal. His work has been presented in several exhibitions in Canada and the United States, with solo shows being mounted recently by the Koffler Gallery Off-Site at General Hardware Company (Toronto, CA, 2013), the Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon, CA, 2012) and the Two Rivers Gallery (Prince George, CA, 2011).
